Ford Motor Company demonstrates a prototype carbon fibre bonnet that could cut vehicle weight and improve fuel economy
Ford Focus carbon fibre prototype bonnet weighs more than 50 percent less than steel version with production times significantly reduced by new processes that can also be applied to other components
Ford European Research Centre involvement in the Hightech.NRW research project follows Ford partnership with Dow Automotive Systems to research advanced material usage, development and manufacturing
Carbon fibre reinforced plastic component is manufactured using new techniques developed as part of advanced research project involving Ford engineers
Ford Develops Carbon Fibre Technology
DUSSELDORF, Germany, Oct. 9, 2012 – Ford Motor Company today demonstrated a prototype carbon fibre bonnet that could help lower fuel consumption for Ford customers.
The carbon fibre reinforced plastic Ford Focus bonnet displayed at the Composites Europe event in Dusseldorf, Germany is constructed from the super-strong material usually associated with bespoke racing vehicles or high-performance sports cars.
The prototype bonnet weighs more than 50 percent less than a standard steel version. As a result of progress made during an on-going research project involving engineers from the Ford European Research Centre, production time for an individual carbon fibre bonnet is fast enough to be employed on a production line – a significant step towards increased usage of lightweight materials in Ford vehicles.
“It’s no secret that reducing a vehicle’s weight can deliver major benefits for fuel consumption, but a process for fast and affordable production of carbon fibre automotive parts in large numbers has never been available,” said Inga Wehmeyer, advanced materials and processes research engineer, Ford European Research Centre. “By partnering with materials experts through the Hightech.NRW research project, Ford is working to develop a solution that supports cost efficient manufacturing of carbon fibre components.”
The involvement of Ford European Research Centre in the Hightech.NRW research project follows Ford’s partnership with Dow Automotive Systems; a collaboration announced earlier this year that will investigate new materials, design processes and manufacturing techniques.
Dow Automotive Systems and Ford will focus on establishing an economical source of automotive-grade carbon fibre, as well as high-volume manufacturing methods: both critical to increasing the range of future Ford battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Carbon fibre offers a very high strength-to-weight ratio. It is up to five times as strong as steel, twice as stiff, and one-third the weight. Advanced materials such as carbon fibre are key to Ford’s plans to reduce the weight of its cars by up to 340kg by the end of the decade.
“There are two ways to reduce energy use in vehicles: improving the conversion efficiency of fuels to motion and reducing the amount of work that powertrains need to do,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford chief technical officer and vice president, Research and Innovation. “Ford is tackling the conversion problem primarily through downsizing engines with EcoBoost and electrification while mass reduction and improved aerodynamics are keys to reducing the workload.”
Ford has partnered with specialists from the Institute of Automotive Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Henkel, Evonik, IKV (Institute of Plastics Processing), Composite Impulse and Toho Tenax for the course of the Hightech.NRW research project.
Funded by the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the project began in 2010 and, despite being set to continue until September 2013, has already made significant progress towards its targets of:
Developing a cost effective method to manufacture carbon fibre composites for body panel applications that can be incorporated into existing vehicle production processes
Significantly reducing individual component production times
Reducing the amount of finishing work required to acceptable standards
Meeting requirements for painting
At least 50 percent reduction in component weight
The refined gap-impregnation process works by introducing resin to pre-formed carbon fibre textile material in a fast, stable and adaptable manner, with high quality results.
Initial testing suggests that CFRP components such as the prototype Ford Focus bonnet will meet Ford’s high standards for stiffness, dent resistance and crash performance. The component has also performed well in pedestrian protection head-impact tests, thanks to its innovative construction of a special foam core sandwiched between two layers of CFRP.
“Customers of Ford’s multi-million selling passenger cars should not expect to see carbon fibre-bodied examples on sale in the near future,” said Inga Wehmeyer. “But the techniques we have refined and developed for the prototype Focus bonnet could be transferred to higher volume applications at a later date.”
DETROIT – Look, up in the sky.
General Motors this weekend is adding three panels to its rotating LED sign atop its Renaissance Center headquarters to salute Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera’s winning the American League Triple Crown. Cabrera led the league in the batting average, runs batted in and home runs, the first player from either league to do so in 45 years.
In addition to the Tigers Old English “D” that is part of the GM sign rotation during Tigers home stands, new panels will say: “Congrats Miguel Cabrera,” “Triple Crown Winner,” and “AL Central Division Champions.”
The Triple Crown was last accomplished by Hall of Famer Carl Yazstremski in 1967 and only 14 times since the year 1900.

New Ram Truck Brand Advertising Demonstrates ‘Moving Heaven and Earth’ Power Behind Technologies in 2013 Ram 1500
‘Moving Heaven and Earth’ campaign showcases state-of-the-art features only offered in the new Ram truck
‘Guts. Glory. Ram.’ tagline and Sam Elliott, voice of Ram, to continue
Ram Truck brand introduces new bilingual Hispanic campaign, evolving ‘A Todo, Con Todo’ theme and featuring award-winning Latin musician Juanes
October 8, 2012 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - A new national advertising campaign, titled “Moving Heaven and Earth,” demonstrates how state-of-the-art technologies like a powerful 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, class-exclusive eight-speed transmission, all-new air suspension system, revolutionary rotary shifter and next-generation Uconnect Access, give the new Ram 1500 the power to move heaven and earth and put the environment under the complete control of the driver.
The ads feature the Ram Truck brand tagline “Guts. Glory. Ram.” The first television spots are scheduled to begin Oct. 12.
Fuel-saving technologies offered in the Ram 1500 pickup, providing the new truck with best-in-class fuel economy of 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, also will take center stage in another campaign running in key U.S. Hispanic markets. This next iteration of the brand’s “A Todo, Con Todo” campaign (meaning “to everything, with everything”) was produced in both Spanish and English and features the award-winning Latin musician Juanes.
“The Ram Truck brand has generated 29 months of consecutive sales growth and increased market share by offering the most capable trucks for every professional and lifestyle need,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Chrysler de Mexico. “The new Ram 1500 is more than a truck, it is the embodiment of no-compromise, industry-first innovations engineered to move heaven and earth, and it is built by a team of determined men and women destined to do the same to bring the most capable light-duty truck to market.”
A 60-second commercial, titled “Road,” establishes the concept of the national Ram 1500 campaign and sets the stage for four additional 30-second ads that follow.
“Set against nature’s most inspiring landscapes, this campaign blends realism and surrealism to tell the story of how the entire Ram team moved ‘heaven and earth’ to build the new light-duty truck,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, Chrysler Group LLC. “These powerful and epic ads visually celebrate the innovative technologies and pioneering capabilities of the new Ram and the investment we put into bringing this new truck to market.”
The 60-second spot opens on a one-lane highway with the new Ram 1500 traveling underneath a starlit sky. The constellations appear to move as the driver changes SiriusXM satellite radio stations. The truck continues on its journey as a series of special effects are mixed with real footage to dramatically demonstrate the class-leading capabilities and features of the new light-duty truck. For example, two major cities come together to shorten the distances (better fuel economy) and a hawk suddenly freezes in mid-flight and shifts course (total control of rotary shifter).
Actor Sam Elliott, the voice of Ram, says “To take it all head-on … shorten the distances, push beyond the possible, roar past convention, shift every course, defy the elements and bring the world to its knees. The new 2013 Ram 1500. Engineered to move heaven and earth.”
Just as the truck comes to a stop at the edge of a rocky cliff, Elliott steps out, marking his first on-camera appearance in a Ram commercial. Elliott continues, “The road doesn’t end here. This is only the beginning. Guts. Glory. Ram.”
The 30-second commercials include:
“Horizon” – Best-in-class 25 mpg highway fuel economy provides for 160 more miles with every fill-up, shortening more distances than ever before to a single tank of gas.
“Dawn” – The revolutionary rotary shifter in the new 2013 Ram 1500, the first of its kind to be introduced in any pickup truck, puts the driver in absolute control of thier surroundings and the road.
“Mountain” – Class-excusive Active Level air suspension in the new Ram 1500 is designed to take on any obstacle in its path, leveling the steepest inclines, conquering the rockiest roads and easing the burden of even the toughest terrain.
“Sky” – The state-of-art Uconnect Access, featuring SiriusXM radio, has the power to put the universe and the satellites directly within the driver’s reach in the new 2013 Ram 1500.
Ram will have a large television presence in professional and college football games, major league baseball playoff games, network and cable primetime programming, and syndicated network and cable sports and outdoor lifestyle programs beginning the weekend of Oct.13.
The first print ad debuts Friday, Oct. 12, in the USA Today sports section. It will be followed by full-page and spread ads in lifestyle publications popular with truck owners, including sports, outdoors, country music, fitness, do-it-yourself, technology and automotive enthusiast magazines.
In addition to television and print, the Ram 1500 campaign includes radio and digital advertising and will be augmented with custom media programs designed to introduce the capabilities of the new truck to customers and potential customers where they work, play and consume media.
The “Moving Heaven and Earth” campaign was created by Dallas-based The Richards Group.
Hispanic Advertising Campaign
The class-leading innovations of the 2013 Ram 1500, and the values of both Hispanic culture and the Ram Truck brand, are the focus of a new advertising campaign targeting the more than 50 million Hispanics in the United States. With trucks being one of the top-selling segments among Latinos and the Ram 1500 and 2500 among the best performing Chrysler Group nameplates with these consumers, the brand created a new series of television, print and radio ads that will run regionally in the top-volume U.S. Hispanic markets for Ram trucks.
The new campaign is the next iteration of the “A Todo, Con Todo” theme, first introduced last year, and features world-famous Latin musician, Juanes, a 17-time Latin Grammy Award winner who has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide.
The ads, produced in Spanish and English, will be placed on Hispanic television networks and stations such as Telemundo and Univision; in national Hispanic magazines including Automundo and ESPN Deportes La Revista; and in Spanish language local newspapers and radio stations in key Hispanic markets. The ads also will run on in-language websites.
“The new Ram 1500 is a symbol of the brand’s commitment to hard work, determination and dependability, values shared with the Latino community and the same values and guiding principles that propelled Juanes to his success as an artist and social activist,” Diaz said. “It is this type of personal conviction and dedication to doing what’s right that makes Juanes an authentic brand ambassador for Ram, a true representative of the idea of living ‘A Todo, Con Todo’.”
The television campaign consists of a 60-second commercial, titled “Anthem,” and two 30-second spots.
The spot opens as Juanes drives through a town in a 2013 Ram light-duty truck. While people go about their daily activities, the voiceover says, “We all have our own set of challenges and to reach the big stage requires talent, desire, determination.” As Juanes loads an all-terrain vehicle into the bed of the truck and heads into the backcountry, the announcer continues, “finding a way to rise above, push our limits further. The 2013 Ram 1500. Because success is not the destination, it’s our journey. Ram. A Todo, Con Todo.”
Two additional 30-second spots celebrate the class-leading technologies found in the new Ram 1500:
“Big Stage” – Best-in-class 25 mpg highway fuel economy provides more control and fewer stops on one’s “drive to success.”
“Suspension” – The truck’s class-exclusive active air suspension helps make “rising to the challenge a regular occurrence.”
In addition to the TV spots, Juanes will be featured in “A Todo, Con Todo” digital advertising.
The Ram Truck brand also will launch custom media programs this fall, linking Ram to Univision, Mexican regional music (Yahoo! En Espanol channel) and the Mexican Futbol soccer League.
In addition, Ram is partnering with the Futbol de Primera radio network as the official partner and exclusive automaker in all World Cup broadcasts.
The “A Todo, Con Todo” campaign was created by Dallas-based Richards/Lerma agency, the Hispanic marketing arm of The Richards Group.

DETROIT – Chevrolet and General Motors employees, dealers and customers are again uniting against breast cancer, hoping to exceed the nearly $1.1 million raised by the American Cancer Society in 2011 through Chevrolet’s nationwide grassroots support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks and other activities.
This October’s events include employee- and dealership-sponsored fund-raising walks; a Chevrolet Certified Service matching rebate contribution program; appearances by a specially themed pink Camaro SS pace car and USAC National Midget Car; and test-drive contributions at selected Southern Women’s Shows. Additional Chevrolet activities will be announced in October.
The towers of GM’s Renaissance Center world headquarters in Detroit will once again be lit with bands of pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Even the all-new Chevrolet Spark will join in the fight. A special “Pink Out” Spark is designed to honor breast cancer survivors and supporters. It wears a production Techno Pink exterior finish and is embellished with custom pink elements inside and out. The “Pink Out” Spark will visit selected community walks throughout the month.
Last year with Chevrolet’s support, the American Cancer Society raised $1,079,633 in contributions to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The money helps fund research, wellness and breast cancer awareness education, and support for breast cancer patients and their families.
“The generosity of our employees, dealers and customers shows how everyday heroes can unite to make a difference in eradicating a disease impacting 1.5 million people,” said Don Johnson, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “For the second year, we are committed to support the American Cancer Society in continuing its fight for more birthdays.”
Johnson will lead Chevrolet’s involvement in Detroit’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 in downtown Detroit.
“The American Cancer Society is thrilled to have the support of Chevrolet and General Motors nationwide to help us lead the fight against breast cancer,” said Jill Elder, vice president, American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division. “One in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to the American Cancer Society for support. The contributions of General Motors and Chevrolet help make it possible to do the most for people with breast cancer today and enable us to continue the great work we’re doing to find cures to end the disease tomorrow.”
Here are the Chevrolet-sponsored activities planned in October in support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:
· Chevrolet and GM employee walks – All month, General Motors facilities, plants and warehouses across the country will participate in fund-raising walks.
· Chevrolet dealership walks – Hundreds of dealerships have already signed up to sponsor teams in community walks throughout October with more expected to join. These walks alone accounted for more than half of the money raised in 2011 that went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Those interested in participating in a Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk in their community can visit www.makingstrideswalk.org.
· Chevrolet Certified Service – Customers who bring their vehicle to a Chevy dealer for qualifying services in October can contribute part or all of their rebates and Chevrolet will match them, up to a total of $150,000. A $39.95 oil and filter change, tire rotation and 27-multi-point inspection is $29.95 after the $10 mail-in rebate. The $99.95 (per axle) ACDelco Durastop ceramic brake pads service is $74.95 after the $25 mail-in rebate. For more information, visit mycertifiedservicerebates.com.
· Chevrolet Racing – A Making Strides Against Breast Cancer-themed pink Camaro SS pace car will appear at selected Chevrolet dealers and GM events throughout October. Chevrolet and Tony Stewart Racing will display a specially wrapped USAC National Midget Car at races at Eldora Speedway in Ohio (Sept. 21-22); Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Sept. 28-29); and the New York State Fair in Syracuse (Oct. 5-7). At those races, representatives from the American Cancer Society will distribute brochures with information on local walks, the importance of early detection and ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer. In early September, Chevrolet contributed $6,200 to the American Cancer Society – $200 for each of the 31 caution laps during the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Breast cancer survivors and their families also spent time in the pink Camaro SS pace car with Team Chevy drivers Jamie McMurray and Ron Hornaday, Jr.
· Chevrolet test drives – Chevrolet will contribute $5 to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for every vehicle test drive at these Southern Women’s Shows: Birmingham, Ala. (Oct. 4-7); Orlando, Fla. (Oct. 11-14); and Jacksonville, Fla. (Oct. 18-21).
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world’s largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality. DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 21, 2012 – Ford’s new Police Interceptors led the pack in recent testing conducted by the Michigan State Police.
The Police Interceptor sedan equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine topped the competition in 0-60 mph, 0-80 mph and 0-100 mph acceleration. These fast closing-in speeds are critical for first responders and law enforcement professionals.
In testing at Grattan Raceway, the Ford Police Interceptor with EcoBoost V6 engine and all-wheel drive posted the fastest single lap and best average lap times.
Competitors with larger V8 engines could not keep up with the superior advanced engineering of the Ford EcoBoost V6. The purpose-built Police Interceptor is designed to outperform the competition by optimizing handling and control in combination with a high-torque engine and robust brakes.
“This year’s testing by the Michigan State Police once again proves Ford Police Interceptors are industry leaders, offering government agencies the desired combination of capability, technology and long-lasting value,” said Lisa Teed, Marketing manager for the Ford Police Interceptor program.
The 3.7-liter V6 all-wheel-drive sedan also boasted the shortest stopping distance for all police vehicles tested.
The Police Interceptor all-wheel-drive utility vehicle posted top 0-60 mph and 0-80 mph times in the acceleration tests and also achieved the quickest lap times versus competing police utility vehicles. The Police Interceptor utility vehicle combines the performance of a sedan with a larger interior package for agencies that require increased cargo capacity.
“We are very proud of the test results,” said Bill Gubing, Ford Police Interceptor chief engineer.
“During post-event inspection, the vehicles show proof of purpose-built durability,” he adds. “The status of the tires and brake pads still show useful life, and are ready for more grueling testing.”
A tough lineup
Ford’s Police Interceptor engine strategy provides a V6 lineup that performs better than V8 engines of years past. The Police Interceptor sedan lineup now comes with three powertrain options, allowing police to choose the engine that best meets their patrol requirements. The sedan is available with a standard 3.5-liter V6, the new 3.7-liter V6 and the performance powerhouse 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost – all paired with all-wheel drive as standard equipment.
The 3.7-liter V6 engine with 305 horsepower is now available on the all-wheel-drive Police Interceptor sedan and is common with the utility vehicle.
A high-capacity six-speed automatic transmission is uniquely calibrated and adapts to pursuit mode for responsiveness to an officer’s demands. All-wheel drive is standard on both sedan and utility vehicle Police Interceptors to optimize handling and control, which is important to meet the needs of first responders in their daily environment.
To develop the all-new Police Interceptor, Ford engineers worked hand-in-hand with Ford’s Police Advisory Board of law enforcement professionals, who provided input on key vehicle attributes such as safety, performance, durability, driver comfort and functionality.
Building on Ford’s safety leadership, the Police Interceptor is engineered to pass 75-mph rear-end crash testing.
Ford Police Interceptor sedan and utility vehicles recently earned top safety ratings in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program testing, which combines vehicle performance in frontal and side-impact crash tests and resistance to rollover.

Auburn Hills, Mich., Apr 4, 2012 –
The all-new 2013 SRT® Viper was unveiled to the world today at the New York International Auto Show, marking its highly anticipated return to the high-performance sports car market.
The fifth generation of the iconic two-seat, American-built supercar has been deliberately evolved to incorporate superior craftsmanship, a host of new technologies and ergonomic improvements while respecting its visceral legacy of outright performance.
“After a gut-wrenching period of uncertainty, the Street and Racing Technology brand team is extremely proud that our hand-built in Detroit, flagship supercar is back and ready to take on the performance car world,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC. “Beyond being the flagship for the new SRT brand, the launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die. Willed to live on by a very special group of performance enthusiasts inside the company and across Viper Nation, this SRT team under our new leadership was challenged to not just continue the legendary Viper, but to create a world-class supercar that would showcase the very best we have to offer.”
Two new models for any performance buyer
For the 2013 model year, two new models of the iconic supercar will be hand built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit – the home for Viper since 1995. Both SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS models offer new interior and exterior designs incorporating premium materials and new exterior surfaces with aerodynamically functional details that are beautifully integrated into the high-tech carbon fiber and aluminum skin. On the inside, designers and engineers strived to rethink all touch points; and upgrade all material appointments and technologies.
“The SRT Viper model is meant to offer a perfect blend of extreme performance and a deliberate preservation of what has become the iconic DNA of the Viper,” Gilles added. “We strove to deliver a supercar that continues to bring the driver as close as possible to the machine.”
The SRT Viper GTS builds on the DNA of the SRT Viper model with more technologically advanced solutions, like two-mode active suspension, to allow this world-class GTS to find new limits on the track while also opening up its envelope as a more premium and mature evolution of the classic, extreme performance formula. Designed and built with premium features and materials inside and out, the Viper GTS will compete with the best performance vehicles in the world with a wide range of creature comforts, advanced drivetrain and interior technologies.
“We’ve purposely evolved the iconic soul and raw performance formula that Viper has maintained over the years,” Gilles said. “Our returning customers will see the world-class levels of pride, quality and hand craftsmanship built into the 2013 Viper. With two price classes of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS, we have offerings for both the traditional core Viper customer and for the new customer who wants the same performance in a package with more technology and premium creature comforts.”
Awe-inspiring V-10 powertrain
At the heart and soul of the 2013 SRT Viper is the venerable, hand-assembled 8.4-liter all-aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine.
Improvements for 2013 include a new, ultra-high flow and lightweight composite intake manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new catalysts to reduce back pressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses. More than 25 pounds has been shaved from the fully dressed engine.
Preliminary performance ratings for the SRT-engineered V-10 Viper are 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated engine in the world.
The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission has been improved with a shorter throw shifter, closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio that has been shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. The 2013 Viper models will be more engaging to drive and top speed is now achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm.
Outstanding ride, handling and capability
Starting with a stiffer structure that provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity, the chassis of the 2013 SRT Viper benefits from numerous enhancements – many learned through racing efforts with Viper GTS-R and Competition Coupe models.
Major updates include the addition of a new aluminum “X” brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting and contributes to improved torsional rigidity and stiffness. A new aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to overall mass savings and improved weight distribution while providing excellent crashworthiness.
Structurally, many areas of the chassis were reworked to take advantage of new materials, reduce thickness in some areas and reshape components for more structural rigidity in others. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 100 pounds.
At the rear, the suspension has been re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability.
A new, driver selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models.
For 2013, SRT Viper models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with substantially improved overall performance, cold weather performance, enhanced overall grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while also broadening the performance envelope. An optional SRT Track Package features Pirelli P Zero Corsa, “soft”-tuned, “racing-type” compound tires that improve handling and precision further on the road or the race track.
For the first time, standard safety technologies such as electronic stability control and traction control help to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment.
All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts.
Stopping performance for the 2013 SRT Viper is engineered to provide shorter stopping distances, better modulation, improved durability and balanced brake performance without fading under extreme conditions.
Four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers, and vented rotors with a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm, are used at all four corners. Brake calipers are forged and weight optimized by fully machining all surfaces. The calipers are among the stiffest available with distortion from heat nearly eliminated even under the most demanding braking conditions.
The available SRT Track Package features lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech.
New premium materials, craftsmanship and technologies
The all-new, driver-oriented interior cabins of the SRT Viper models have been totally revamped for 2013 with superior craftsmanship, premium material appointments and performance-oriented technologies.
For the first time, all major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS model, all surfaces are fully leather skinned, and standard accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching.
Quality fit and finish across the lineup is showcased by triple-paint-finished Gun Metal appliqués on the cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console.
Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Both driver and passenger enjoy improved comfort from thigh support and deep side bolsters designed to match the extreme lateral acceleration capabilities of the SRT Viper.
Seating position in the 2013 SRT Viper models is 20 mm lower for more room and enhanced performance-driving ergonomics. Seat travel is extended by 90 mm overall, which enables expanded seating options from a more rearward positioned bulkhead. For the first time, seat height can be adjusted by up to 40 mm – manually on the SRT model and power controlled on the GTS.
The new 2013 Viper is the most spacious model in the history of the nameplate. The floor pan and bulkhead have been extended approximately 90 mm to provide improved legroom and more rearward seat track movement.
Designed specifically for the 2013 SRT Viper, the new 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument cluster display uses a full-time analog tachometer readout in the center to confirm the performance driving feedback philosophy of the Viper. Drivers have a wide range of custom and personal options such as an additional digital speedometer readout just below the tachometer. The vehicle information is clearly communicated with easy-to-understand icons. Intuitively controlled through a simple four-way steering-wheel control, the driver can configure the screens to display the information they desire, easily mixing and matching information.
Uconnect® Access provides new level of connectivity
The 2013 SRT Viper lineup includes the new, next generation Uconnect® Access in-vehicle connectivity system that provides drivers with access to more information, emergency services, more entertainment and improved graphics.
Viper customers can choose between two Uconnect Media Centers, RA3 and RA4, which provide a range of new features and multiple ways to control media in the vehicle. The system includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen along with a set of hard keys for commonly used functions, including traditional knobs for tuning the radio bands and radio volume. Touchscreen buttons along the bottom of the screen allow drivers to easily access the radio, climate controls, navigation, phone, and new, select, certified applications. The new, highly sculpted steering wheel has a host of finger-tip mounted controls for audio, Uconnect, cruise control (first application) and launch control.
SiriusXM Travel Link also is available with Uconnect, providing premium data services and information to make every trip more efficient. SiriusXM Traffic works with the vehicle’s navigation system to display traffic speed and traffic flow information along with accident information to assist drivers in routing around congested areas. An expanded SiriusXM channel lineup includes exclusive programming, including the new SiriusXM Latino channels, an auto industry first.
A range of Harman Kardon® surround-sound systems are available across the SRT Viper lineup that feature the latest in audio system technology. All Harman Kardon audio systems include a high-voltage class D amplifier with tracking power supply and up to 11 channels of amplification. The Harman Kardon system with exclusive Logic 7 surround-sound processing is available in the Viper GTS model with a total of 18-speakers, including four subwoofers located behind the seats. All Harman Kardon systems in the 2013 SRT Viper lineup include high-performance, high-efficiency GreenEdge technology loudspeakers that are extremely light and include rare earth magnets. The magnets inside each speaker ensure efficient speaker operation and enhanced performance. The audio systems operate on 32 volts – so the new and improved sound system achieves more than double the acoustic power of the current system.
Refined evolution of SRT’s hallmark – aggressive and functional exterior designs
The all-new, timeless exterior design blends contemporary execution with evolutionary refinement.
All-new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels are firsts for SRT Viper models resulting in significant weight reduction, improved high-speed stability and a slippery .364 drag coefficient.
The forward-hinged hood carries the redesigned Viper badge – aptly named “Stryker” by the Viper Club of America – positioned in the center; and offers unobtrusive access to several service points and the SRT-engineered V-10 powerplant.
The classical low-stance and the extreme cab rearward proportions that have become the unmistakable silhouette of the iconic supercar, return on the 2013 SRT Viper models along with the dramatic fender “gills” – another traditional Viper design cue that helps to extract heat from the engine compartment.
The 2013 Viper models feature a contemporary take on the traditional “double-bubble” roof configuration that maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area – allowing additional room for helmets during recreational competitive driving.
Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration.
Functional “blisters” incorporated into the 70 mm projector headlamp lenses create a three-dimensional view that gives Viper a distinctive glare.
The lower-front grille is purposefully designed as an evolution of the traditional Viper low-profile cooling opening configuration and discretely carries a refined V-shape structure.
The exhaust system continues to exit forward of the rear wheels and now carries further refinement with cast aluminum, sill-mounted exhaust bezels.
For the first time, the 2013 SRT Viper models carry LED taillamps that integrate stop-and-turn illumination in one element. Snakeskin texture in the lens carries the surface work seen in the gills and hood textures. With dark-masked lenses, the horizontal lamps appear dark until the LED elements fire. Each lamp carries 50 LEDs that provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect.
The five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel design on the 2013 Viper model is available with fully polished (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black finishes.
The Viper GTS has a split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design with three available finishes, including polished face with graphite-painted pockets (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black.
Available SRT Track Package wheels are ultra-lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or matte black finishes.
The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand uses a successful product development formula featuring five proven hallmarks: awe-inspiring powertrains; outstanding ride, handling and capability; benchmark braking; aggressive and functional exteriors and race-inspired and high-performance interiors to remain true to its performance roots.
The expansion of the SRT vehicle lineup in the 2012 model year features four new products that are world-class performance contenders and bring the latest in safety technologies and creature comforts. These products include the Chrysler 300 SRT8®, Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, Dodge Charger SRT8 and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
Making its highly anticipated return to the high-performance sports car market in late 2012 is the new 2013 SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS. The SRT flagship performance machines arrive with more power and performance, superior craftsmanship, new technologies and creature comforts.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Monday, March 26, 2012) – Dodge and SRT Motorsports announced today an all-new 2013 Dodge Dart rally car piloted by four-time Rally America Champion and 17-time X Games Gold Medalist Travis Pastrana will compete in the 2012 Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) Series.
“At Dodge, racing is an integral part of our heritage and embodies our competitive spirit, so we’re very excited to announce the next chapter in racing for Dodge with our all-new Dodge Dart,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO-Dodge Brand. “The new Dart Global RallyCross Championship car with 600 horsepower and driver Travis Pastrana takes our passion for performance to all new heights.”

“When I first heard about GRC, I was really interested, and after watching some of the rounds last year and then actually competing at X Games I was hooked!” said Pastrana. “Now to be able to partner with Dodge to field my own program this year is a dream come true. The new Dodge Dart offers the perfect platform for rally cross, and I look forward to putting it on the podium all season long!”
Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC, said that having Pastrana piloting a Dodge Dart and competing in GRC is a natural fit.
“Travis is a living example of what action sports activities are all about, so he fits in perfectly with the youthfulness and passion for performance of the Dodge brand and the SRT Motorsports team,” said Gilles. “He’s proven that he can handle just about anything with wheels, so it’s going to be great to watch him pilot our new Dodge Dart in Global RallyCross.”
The Dart rally car is custom built specifically for Global RallyCross racing, but shares a few traits with the production Dodge Dart. The Dart features an athletic, sporty exterior, a world-class interior with high-quality materials, state-of-the art technology and enough exterior and interior color and material choices to fit any customer.
David Bailey, Senior Engineering Manager for SRT Motorsports, knows the new Dodge Dart rally car is equipped to handle the intense racing conditions.
“The sport is extremely exciting and the on-track action can be brutal on the drivers and the cars,” said Bailey. “The cars are jumping higher than ever and landing safely. The Dart rally car is lightweight with a very powerful motor. The zero to 60 mile per hour times are incredible, as low as 1.9 seconds, so with Travis behind the wheel, we can’t wait for the season opener.”
Global RallyCross is a spin-off of the X Games rally races. It combines the skill of rally racing with the excitement of X Games.
